The Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society (ACEH) is a reputable non-profit and registered charitable housing provider dedicated to supporting Indigenous peoples experiencing homelessness. Our work centers around the voices of those who have shared their experiences, immediate needs, and solutions. Through building partnerships locally and island-wide, the ACEH works to identify and address systemic and structural barriers and share information, resources, and lessons learned while also providing cultural support, connections, and housing stability.

ABOUT YOU

Are you a dedicated and motivated individual passionate about making a meaningful impact in the lives of Indigenous peoples facing homelessness? Join the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society (ACEH) as we seek to expand our team with the vital position of Indigenous Community Justice Manager. As the manager, you will be integral to our Indigenous Community-Based Justice Program. You will foster relationships with key stakeholders such as BC Corrections, Victoria PD, and the Crown, contributing to developing informed and culturally sensitive program offerings while supporting healing plans and cultural connections.

Additionally, you will raise public awareness, aid in diversion efforts, and facilitate reintegration into the community. You will be responsible for leading and providing oversight of our Community-Based Justice Program, working collaboratively with a dedicated team to provide culturally tailored services to First Nations, Inuit, and Metis (FNIM) individuals in the justice system. Your role will involve liaising with various agencies, promoting public awareness, and advancing alternative sentencing options. ABOUT THE ROLE

Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of the Indigenous Justice Program, including prevention, diversion, Gladue Aftercare, and re-integration into the community for FNIM adults and youth.
  • Support, supervise, and oversee the Justice Team, including Indigenous Community Justice Services Elder Mentors, Youth Justice Coordinator, and any contract positions.
  • Gladue Aftercare Care Case Management, Healing Plans, and Reporting.
  • Provide Gladue Aftercare support individuals with reports and healing plans.
  • Build partnerships and support case management for those released to access traditional culture, health, and wellness.
  • Support sentencing by educating the courts about the individual’s needs and advocate for Alternative Measures.
  • Connection with Court the Crown, BC Corrections, and Native Court Workers to identify FNIM individuals in the justice system.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, records, and systems for case management and reporting.
  • Responsible for completing different reporting on financial activities, tracking, and statistics. Working with an Elder to incorporate traditional knowledge and culture into the reports.
  • Support individuals with Gladue Reports to address their immediate needs and assist them in following through with recommendations.
  • Support the Justice Navigators on developing Healing Plans before and following sentencing.
  • Evaluate Program Successes and provide the ACEH Executive Director updates on the developmental needs of the ACEH Justice Program.
  • Assist in the development recommendations in the Gladue Report.
  • Make referrals and provide advocacy with other service providers.
  • Keep apprised for relevant legislation or policy changes concerning judicial and social services fields.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure client files are secured in a locked filing cabinet daily.

All other related duties assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Graduate from an approved medical school in Family Practice (FRCP)
  • Licensed and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Prior experience and or passion to gain knowledge in Indigenous health and cross- cultural medical care.
  • Preference will be given to those with rural Indigenous experience.
  • Understanding of Indigenous health disparities, cultural competency, trauma informed care and social determinants of health.
  • Experience or personal insights working cooperatively with people with disabilities, lived experience, and addictions considered an asset.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations, family support, social services, and Indigenous support services and programs considered an asset.
  • Required to consent to the Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check for Working with Vulnerable Adults

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Required Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in criminal justice and/or social work/human services work
  • Minimum of 2 years of work in a social or justice services environment or a combination of education and experience deemed relevant by FNTI.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a manager position.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in administrative/human service work with at least 1-year progressive experience overseeing complete cycle intake services.
  • Must know the judicial system, Criminal Code, and other federal and provincial statutes.
  • Must know about the restorative justice program.
  • Must demonstrate previous experience/knowledge of record keeping and report writing.
  • Knowledge of conventional court practices/diversion processes.
  • Experience in program delivery and administration.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and experience working with Indigenous persons.
  • Must have a driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Required to consent to the Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check for Working with Vulnerable Adults and be cleared to workRequired Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to work independently and effectively respond to and manage competing demands while adhering to deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
    • Effective written, electronic, and verbal communication skills to facilitate interprofessional collaborative practice, healthy and culturally safe environments, and a respectful workplace for community members, staff, guests, and volunteers.
    • Demonstrated understanding of the intergenerational trauma that occurs because of colonization, Residential Schools, Sixties Scoop, and other oppressive systems and the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to use stairs.
  • Ability to complete repetitive tasks (such as sitting, standing, walking, and bending).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to collaborate with Island Health leaders to support admission and discharge of patients and willingness to manage care onsite as appropriate.
